Yemeni army deploys 30,000 troops to south to boost security ahead of Gulf Cup
By The Associated Press (CP) – Oct 22, 2010
SAN'A, Yemen — A Yemeni security official says the government has deployed an additional 30,000 soldiers across the southern province of Aden to boost security ahead of next month's Gulf Cup soccer tournament.
Lt. Gen. Saleh al-Zouari says the troops and intelligence officers will conduct security sweeps in search of militants and provide additional security for the eight-team competition from Nov. 22-Dec. 4.
Some Persian Gulf countries are having second thoughts about sending teams amid rising attacks by resurgent al-Qaida fighters and a stubborn southern secessionist movement.
There are almost daily clashes between the military and suspected al-Qaida gunmen.
Since May, al-Qaida has been blamed for the deaths of more than 55 soldiers
